  1. I'll just add a couple more other people haven't mentioned.

The previous owners of my house put bricks in the toilet tank to lower water use.  BAD IDEA.  The bricks deteriorated and it ruined the toilet and plumbing and i had to have it replaced.  When i replaced it i spoke with the plumber about low flow toilets.  Many of them give poor flushing.  He recommended one with air injection for added flushing strength.  I'm very happy with it and it has noticeably lowered water use and my water bill.  If you have old toilets, think about replacing them.  It might be worth it.

People have mentioned some ways to reduce water use for laundry, but one thing they didn't mention was how often you wash.  Some households wash a towel after every single use.  If you shower every day, or more than once a day... this is very wasteful!  In most cases, if your towel can dry out between uses, you shouldn't have to wash it but once a week, and it will only use 1/7th the water for washing towels.  Don't wash things that are basically clean.

  2. place a basin or bucket under the tap you use to wash your hands and whatever water you collect, you can use to water plants or clean dirt of cars and exterior paths or walls or any other cleaning or watering job.

When you are running your shower, also place a bucket in with you to collect however much you may be able to for watering and general cleaning use.

When you are preparing food that would be normally boiled in a lot of water, see if you can stir fry or steam with just a few spoons of water.  This is more nutritious any way.

If you are mopping the floors, try a steam mop.  They use but a cup of water to do the average size room, clean brilliantly and you do not waste water.

If you do get a shower of rain, do set out bowls, buckets, basins and catch what you can of it.  If you have your own home think of installing a rain water tank to store pure drinking water.

Whatever taps are dripping, have the washers changed and keep onto any waste.

If you use a public restroom and the water is running, turn it off... even if you did not leave it on.. there are morons everywhere...

If there is a public restroom broken toilet or water faucet report it to the people running the place for them to fix it a.s.ap.

When you shower, it is possible to be done and shampooed etc in 3 minutes without the tap running too much.  Turn the water back till you have a nice stream without too much.

Buy the water saver shower heads.  They are brilliant with low pressure giving a good brisk shower and not wasting water.

Wash dishes and clothes as much as possible by hand.  It saves on water.  The water you used to wash these things can be put to further use in cleaning jobs or watering your grounds.

Mulch around trees and plants.  This will help to retain what water you use so the plants are benefitted by this too.

    cheers

  3. build an outhouse in your back yard , practice family bathing down at the creek, dont drink any water drink only beer, urinate on your plants instead of water, instead of washing dishes let your dog l**k fhem clean, become a nudist to keep from having to wash your cloths, terminate all relations with your gold fish, all the water you save make sure you deposit in the water bank so you get interest on it

  4. - shorter showers

    - don't run water while brushing teeth

    - put bucket under air conditioner pipe to collect the h20 & use it to water plants

    - put bucket in the shower to catch excess h20

    - use a flat plastic dish tub to wash dishes & then pour h20 in plants when done.

  6. instead of using the shower tap pour water in two buckets and take shower from that.

you can wash your shirt or small clothes with your own hand instead of putting them all in washing machine which takes too much water. (saves electricity too)

every drop of water is precious. so if u drink half glass of water save the remaining in a bucket...even the water that u used for washing your vegetable. u can pour this saved water on your plants.

  7. I'll start you off, don't leave the tap running, don't leave the water running when you are washing your hair... there's many ways, and I could keep going on and on, but check on Yahoo for more! :)

  8. a tip not mentioned is how to save water in flushing the toilet. If you aren't replacing your existing toilet for a low-flow one, products like the 'hippo' will save water in each flush without damaging your toilet like a brick might.

  9. 1. Take showers, not baths.

    2. Turn off the faucet when you are brushing your teeth.

    3. If it's yellow let it mellow (don't flush after you pee - pee is naturally sterile - and odorless if you drink enough water)

    4. Heat water on the stove, microwave, or in tea kettle, rather than running it until hot.

    5. Cool water in refridgerate or freezer, instead of running it until it's cool

    6. Water lawns in the very early morning or late evening to eliminate quick evaporation

    7. Don't water durring draught months

    9. Leave out containers during rain showers to use to water indoor flowers and plants

    10. Only run the dishwasher or the washing machine if you have a full load

  10. - don't use the bathtub

    - use a glass for the water when brushing.

    - whenever you wash (hands, dishes, anything), don't turn the tap to full. have the water flow just enough that you use every bit of what comes out of the tap.

    - don't over water the plants.  you probably don't need to water them daily.

    - make sure the tap is turned off when not in sure

    - check for leaks and don't delay in fixing them

    - don't run the dishwasher daily.  clean then accumulate dishes and run the dishwasher only when it is full

    - report broken fire hydrants or broken pipes.

    - optimize the use of the washing machine.  don't wash just a very few clothes at a time.

    - do your bathroom cleaning while you're taking a shower.

  11. Shower with a friend.
