Okay I'm planning to sing this song for my school. The song is I Have Nothing by Whitney Houston. I know it's like a high song and that's why I need help. Do any of you have any tips to keep my voice clear, healthy, etc.

And also can you give me some singing tips too!

Thank you! ;D

  1. There's a diaphram exercise that I learned from my old chorus teacher, who used to be opera-worthy in singing, but she fell out of practice.

The exercise is called 'candles', and it's difficult if your diaphram is out of shape. Put your thumb in your belly button, and lower your palm to your stomach, that's where you want to push the air from.

To do candles, hold out your index finger in front of you, pointed up, with your arm straight, then exhale shaprly, pushing with your diaphram, hard enough so that you feel wind on your finger, like blowing out a candle. Do these at a fairly quick pace. I'll say roughly 120 - 130 BPM. Start slow, with 20 candles before you sing. When you do it right you should get a bit light headed by the end. As you become more adept you can slowly increase the amount. She used to tell us horror stories about college professors making the class do candles to the point where some of them vomited from the exertion.

If you practice singing or exercises while sitting down, always sit forward in your chair a good 6 inches and keep your back straight.

Syllable training and interval practice.  "Mama's a mean mama, papa's a poor papa, baby's a bad baby."  slowly increasing speed, making sure to say each word with as much clarity as possible. It's hard to iterate rhythm, M and P, fast triplets,  on the root of whatever scale your using, and the B's, go root to 4th to root, with the "bad" being a tied-triplet (F to E for C major), and just go up and down a few steps repeating the exercise. You'll want to increase the speed until the words are no longer recognizable.

Practice your T's. Articulate T's and S's whenever they appear in whatever you sing.  A sharp T sound and a sharp quick sss connecting lyrics with help clarify any of the words.

As far as sound clarity and not lyrical clarity, keep a long O shape to your mouth, which is difficult in pop music, because alot of the time it's not called for, especially when you need to smile while singing to maintain that image, but maintaining an open cavity inside the mouth without being wide will stop notes from becoming sharp or flat.

After you do warm ups, yawning will reset your larynx helping you keep pitch integrity as well.

Weather is also a factor, rainy days with higher barometric pressure will push on your vocal cords and make everything you sing a little flat. Scale exercises, and range exercises will help with the range, try to push your range a half-step higher than where you are completely comfortable. There will always be a limit to your range, but with training you can increase it a few half-step as they get used to varying degrees of tightness. Hope some of this helps, if you didn't know it already.

  2. The only good advise that I can give you is to get a good voice teacher..... mean while go on google they may have some free links that you can go to for some tips on singing, good luck to you !!!!!

  3. Open your mouth, make sure that you have rounded vowels as to not sound off key (flat / sharp)

take air in from your diaphragm. Its the muscle right under your tummy.  that will give you the best support for the high notes.

believe it or not, facial expression can alter the sound of your voice! if you're frowning all the time it will make it sound worse. so relax your face muscles.

to keep your vocal chords good, DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.  drinking water hydrates and soothes the chords.

DO NOT DRINK CAFFEINE BEFORE SINGING. EVER!

(seriously, this can ruin your voice, make the chords coated in sugar and will limit your range/tone)

if you are sick the day of performance and have a really dry throat you can get some "clear voice" from a music store, it will hydrate and sooth it to the max. if you have c**p in the back of your throat, there are medicinal products with menthol that are made for vocal performers. the menthol will dry up everything, so only use it as a last resort, because it will also dry up the chords and make it more difficult if you really dont need it.

  4. The one most important things of all is how you move your air.

DO NOT move your air from your shoulders and chest. You MUST take plenty of air by expanding the muscles around your waist. And then you MUST move your air from your waist. NEVER, NEVER take air in from you chest and shoulders then move it  from there. ALWAYS inhale air DOWN and move it from your waist.

  5. always have your back straight to get the most sound out of your voice. drink water, and stay away from sugar.

hold your hand on your stomach and sing with your diaphram with you hit the high notes. warm up with scales everything time you sing.
