Barcelona is fantastic! The main drag from the harbor into the city is a huge pedestrian zone a mile or two long full of shops, restaurants, birds for sale, theaters, bars with outdoor tables and so on. 16 years ago the hotels were cheap, but I couldn't tell you what they are now. The city also has lots of buildings done by Gaudi, known for his psychedelic style long before the 1960s. Huge parks in the hills, the Olympic Stadium, and palaces and classic architecture everywhere.

I studied abroad in Barcelona.  It's a beautiful city, but to be honest, I liked other parts of Spain better.  Barcelona isn't very Spanish compared to other cities.  For one, they speak Catalan, which is not the "Spanish" most of the world recognizes (that's Castelian.)  

Definately visit all the Gaudi sites.  Parc Guell, Casa Mila, etc.  Go to La Sagrada Familia.  It's probably the most famous site there.  Then there's the beach, Montjuic (a small mountain with museums and the 1992 Olympic stadium, awesome views of the city as well.)  There's also a lot of great vineyards outside the city where they make cava and wine.  The Pyrenees mountains and the Costa Brava aren't far from Barcelona either.  Both are must-sees if you have the time and money.  

Picasso was from near Barcelona and there's a museum for him there too.  Also visit Las Ramblas, the main drag with markets, etc.  The boardwalk has a lot to do also, there's the Arc de Triumf in Barcelona too.  Go to the old city and see the cathedral from the 12-1300s.  

The metro system is great, very easy to navigate.  There's so much to see there.  Like I said Barcelona's a great city, but if you want "Spain" I'd go elsewhere.  

Oops, I got him mixed up with Dali.  But, either way the Picasso Museum IS IN Barcelona.

Just a remark for "snood":

Picasso was not either from Barcelona or near it. Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born in Málaga, in the south of Spain, on October, 25th, 1881. The family lived somewhere in Barcelona years later, but he was born in Málaga.

defiantly see the gaudi museum, he was an excellent architect.  there is also this tourist bus that you can buy tickets for and it will drop you off at all of the tourist spots and you can get on and off as many times as you want.  also, there is a church that you can climb to the top of the steeple, i can't recall the name of it but it was fascinating.  as for hotels, we stayed in hostels, and i don't recommend it.

Well seems like most before me have done a pretty good job of listing things to see.

My recommendations:

-Port Vell (sport boat habor at bottom of city).. walk back around to left side through Barcelonetta (little barcelona) to the beach then left down along the beaches on the Prominade to Port Olympic

-Every thing from Gaudi.. start by riding the double decker tourbus then go back and check out what you want in detail.  

The Gaude houses cost Euro 16.00 to get in  (OUCH)

-Ramblas.. goes from Avenue Diagnal down to the port.  This is where most of the mimes and human statues are found.  Beware of pick pockets around this area!!!

-The Mercat (Market) just off the side of Ramblas.  You can't miss it if you walk down and keep looking off to the right.

-At the top of Ramblas, Placa de Catalunya, walk right, past Hard Rock Cafe then right again.  This is the old district... beautiful.

-Placa Real , not far from Ramblas, great place to get an ICE cold beer in a goblet and people watch.

-Castell (castle) at the top of Monjuic park.  Fantastic view of Barcelona and the Mediterean Sea

-Montserrat Monistary, by car (freeway A-2) or train to Monistrol de Montserrat.  Just before this town there is a cable car station that goes upto the monistary.   WOW !!!!!  what a view!!!

I'm going to Barcelona this summer. I found these 2 cool websites. There's a tourist card on that you can buy that gives you discounts on different museums and other attractions. www.barcelona.com and http://www.bcn.es/turisme/english/turism...

There are some really good books at amazon.com and I also would suggest the little popout maps. You can find them at amazon.com or any bookstore. Enjoy!
