My friends and I (all 17) want to go to Cancun for a week. Do we need our parents to go into Mexico?

  1. You would need letters of permission signed by both parents and notarized.  This would be an EXTREMELY unwise thing to do...it would take at least 4 days to drive to Cancun. It is a challenging drive.  IT IS NOT WISE FOR 17 YR. OLD GIRLS TO DRIVE TO CANCUN ALONE.  I am an American woman living in Mexico and generally believe travel here to be safe...but this is a waaay to long trip and not wise for young ladies alone.  If your parents would grant permision, I would think they are being VERY reckless.  Please choose a place closer to home, in the U.S., or have a couple of parents accompany you.

  2. no, you dont need your parents to go into Mexico. As a child I would go in and out of Mexico all the time. It funny, but at the time, the U.S. border agents would not even ask for an I.D. or anything to my brother and I.  I was only 12. Once you have the tourist permits going into Mexico is easier than coming back.

But if you plan on driving, you will need a special permit for the car, which you can get at the border. You should buy insurance that covers you in Mexico. Dont take a gun with you because you will be stopped every so often at "revision" points and may be searched.

A word of caution: Mexico is just as dangerous (well, more dangerous) than traveling in the U.S.

People think that the U.S. is some safe haven where nothing can go wrong.  Well, we have shootings here, bank robberies, murders, kidnapings, drunk drivers, gangs, drug dealers, random acts of violence, rapes, burgerlies...and the list goes on.

Dont stop living a full life because there is danger out there.

Dont avoid doing things you want because others would not do them.

I go to many parts of the world. Some are very dangerous according to some people.  But I feel that getting killed in Bogota by some crazy drug addict is no worse than getting killed by a wrong way drunk driver in Phoenix, Az.

So I live to enjoy. Not to avoid what others would avoid.

  3. Yes ,you certainly do . you all need passports and notarized permission from your parents or an authorized guardian.

    You are obviously playing around.

  4. If you plan to fly in and back to the U.S. you need a passport

  5. If there is a parent going with you all, and you all have your passports, I think you should be fine. I would recommend you have a letter from your parents that says the people you'll be with, the days you'll be gone, and important stuff like that.

    From the website mentioned below:

"As of January 31, 2008, all U.S. residents, age 19 and older, will be required to show proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate, and a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license – or a passport – when traveling to Western Hemisphere countries by land or ferry. (Persons age 18 and younger will need proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate – or a passport – when traveling to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the countries of the Caribbean."

So yea, bring your passport and I think you'll be fine.
