Can you golf after a hip replacement?

I am only 54 years old and have just gotten my left hip replaced? In reading some of the materials, they don't want my left foot pigeon toed or the hip may dislocate. Does this mean I can't perform a full golf swing?

  1. ASK A DOCTOR NOT THE INTERNET!! FRIG!!

  2. Of course you will want to ask your doctor because he will know best how the surgery went, etc.  And perhaps have the club golf pro analyze your swing to see if your left foot goes pigeon toed.

That said, Larry Foster, M.D., is a New York orthopaedic surgeon, recreational but avid golfer, and now an author who answers many of your questions about joint replacement in his book, Dr. Divots Guide to Golf Injuries (wwwdoctordivot.com). Dr. Fosters self-published work has 14 chapters, including one titled 'The Older Golfer' and another, 'Joint Replacement and the Golfer.' There are plenty of sports medicine books on the market, but this is one the best-documented works for golfers. Following is some of the information youll find in the chapter on joint replacement, based on surveys of orthopaedic surgeons.

    Total Hip Replacement Surgery

    • None of the surgeons surveyed prohibited his patients from playing golf after surgery.

    • The golfing patients did not have higher rates of complications than nongolfing patients.

    • Many of the surgeons recommended a three to four-month recovery period before returning to play.

    • Seven of 10 doctors advised their patients to use golf carts after resuming play.

    • Ninety-percent of amateur golfers were able to play without pain.

    Good luck

  3. my dad had one!you should wait a while the muscle and bone needs to grow and attach to your implanted hip so I would say you have to wait a while but you proablly be able to golf eventually. But i would suggest you do ask your doctor because he would definitley know

  4. i would ask your surgeon or physician, you wouldn't want to dislocate it, is better to be safe than sorry

  5. It may be possible.

I think Mike Ditka had both hips replaced and continues to play golf.  But before you rush off for a new set of Calloways, remember that Ditka used to play football with reckless abandon and probably has a pain threshold beyond imagination.

Check with your doctor.  If you don't like that advice, check with Ditka's doctor.

  6. ask ur doctor...

  7. I've had both hips replaced.  I can't play golf.  But, then, I couldn't play golf BEFORE I had the hip replacements either!! =)

Wait awhile until you don't have so many restrictions & precautions.  They are usually for the short term, not forever.      When you have your next follow-up appt. with the surgeon (I had my first follow-up at 3 months, then 6 months, then one year) ask him when it will be ok to start playing.

  8. well not for the first six months, after that, most things are well healed and you can go back to playing golf

  9. YES, you can.

But, only if you are wearing a sacroiliac belt (aka SI belt) around your pelvis!

What it does is that by providing the correct balance of resistance and resilience, the SI belt re-establishes the joint’s normal motion,  thus relieves stress and instability at these weight bearing structures. The price of SI belts are in reasonable range these days, average cost is about $40 USD. I know a lot of people who wear SI belts, and I've read some astonishing testimonials about it. There are many  si belts out there, but Serola SI Belt seems to be the best one as far as quality, comfort, and price are considered. Check out their website for more: http://www.serola.net/product_new_sac_be...

I think you buy directly from their website at: http://serolabelt.com/new-serola-sacroil...

Hope it helps, good luck to your golfing!
