Can you grout tile over existing tile?

Question

Okay my hubby and I are DIY kind of people and are pretty good at it too. When it comes to our bathroom we are at a debate on how much time we want to invest into it...as we only plan to live in this house for another year or two...

ANYHOO, I am wanting to redo the tile in my bathroom...the back splash to the bath/shower... Is it possible to just put tile over exsisting tile to save time and money....with out a month later having it fall? I just hate to rip up the wall to replace my tile...So if anyone knows about this or has any suggestions for me please post.

Oh I know how to tile and grout too. I just have never done it over existing tile...

That is NOT the way I would do it. I do everything myself and could not look in a mirror if I was to try this. The grout will leave voids between the grout joints of the old tile and the new. It is unavoidable since tiles are not exact in size. If the job is worth doing, isn't it worth doing right? It shouldn't take hardly any time to demo the old tile with a wide cold chisel and hammer. Once started, Thin set tile pops right off. Glued takes a bit more unless you pull the drywall too. That's what I would do.

As the best teachers I've had have taught, "Anything worth doing is worth doing well."  I think you already know what you need to do.  You really should demo the existing tile first.  You'll end up with a better product at the end.  You could probably glue the tile to the existing tile but regular thin-set will not work over old tile.  My advice... Take the time to do it right.

No way!!!! Dont do it!!! Even if you plan to move in a year or two... tile on top of tile wont hold up more than a month or two! Just work a little at a time and do the right way! Good luck!

yeah you can do that, just make sure you've got a strong adhesive and yeah thats very possible, maybe you'll think about using some organic glue and grout i'll try to find a link and get back to you on that, the other people are right, you can but your going to have problems, and telling a realtor who's respectable is going to have it redone or want it redone, your best bet is to take the tile down and do it over from the beginning

putting tile over tile will not last. to save time remove the old tile and replace with tile board.

Yes it most certainly can be done ..  The newer stronger thinsets will bond and hold( with a bit of extra drying time) and grouting then is no different then other grouting.. By  no means use a organic adhesives they are not meant  for a wet area as 1 "experienced" 6 month tile setter advised..  But most answers I agree with rip it out and redo it right you ll save the money  by doing it yourself..and you ll be updating it if your going to sell it in a few years..Baths always recoup most of remodeling in a house anyway  GL
