Question:

Can you guys help me with my new song?

I recently started on a new song, and I finished recording up to the end of the first verse (I still don't have a name for it)... when I showed it to a friend of mine, he said I can't use the intro because it sounds a lot like Black Sabbath's Crazy Train. The thing is... I didn't rip it off... I never really listened to Sabbath. I came up with the guitar riff on my own.

My question is... do you think I should rewrite it, or is it fair game since I came up with it myself?

Here's my song: www.cutsville.com/samples/music/verse1.m...

Here's the Sabbath song: www.cutsville.com/samples/crazytrain.mp3

By the way, the songs are completely different after the intro, as you will be able to tell.

Thanks for your help!

  1. that sounds like same thing as crazy train

and how have u never heard the song crazy train?!?!?!

thats like a sin in itself, rather than have the exact same sounding riff as crazy train

  2. Here's the thing... it might be your creation, but everyone else who bothers to be aware of one of the most influential rock songs of all time will hear what you've written and immediately think you're ripping the song off.

I did, initially. It wasn't until your vocals kicked in and the feeling changed that I slowly began to accept that you hadn't. However, you can't run away from the fact that the first five notes or so are *exactly* the same ones used in the intro to crazy train.

Rewrite it. It doesn't have to be a huge rewrite, but change it just enough so that it doesn't match that many notes in a row.

I'm sure it dampens your artistic spirits, but if you want people to not think you're just totally ripping the Ozzman off here, even though it probably ticks you off, it's something you've gotta do.

and if you would've put an http:// in front of your links, they would've worked, even though they were truncated. just fyi.
