  1. The only realistic and fair way to do it is to put the season on hold for two weeks. That way, any current MLB player would be available to take part in the Olympics.

But there's complications. Pausing the season would mean extending the season by two weeks, meaning the World Series would have to be played in November or cutting down on the number of games from 162 to about 148. MLB owners probably aren't interested in having the World Series played in November, especially if the World Series participants come from cold weather cities. And cutting down on games would bring protest from teams close in the playoff races. They could argue that their teams are being deprived of a fair chance to make the playoffs with less games to play.

In short, it will never happen. Baseball has never thought to pause its games because it doesn't need Olympic exposure like other sports do. The WNBA puts its season on hold because more exposure for women's basketball is in its best interest and their players will probably have more exposure at the Games than during the WNBA regular season. The NHL doesn't necessarily have to do it, but the league's best players want to play for their countries. Plus, MLB owners won't want to close their parks and miss out on gate revenue during the summer when they're the prime summer attraction.

And of course, there's the primary complication: that baseball (and softball) won't be Olympic sports in 2012. The only way MLB players will be able to compete internationally is through the World Baseball Classic.

  2. Add baseball to the Winter Olympics.

  3. You could take two weeks off but then if a teams best player gets hurt its over, and you can't just take two weeks off in the middle of a season, it gets everyone out of their grooves.  None of the best players would want to go, and no team would ever approve of it. So it will just have to stay the way it is now.

  4. Actually, it's pretty simple.  You just take a week or two off during Olympic years.  Reduce the numbers of days off in the Playoffs to partially offset the amount of time that the World Series needs to be pushed back, but it's only once every 4 years.  Several other sports, including the WNBA and NHL also take time off during the Olympics to send players, so it's not that big of a deal.
