Can you have a Dental Abscess without ever having tooth pain?

On a Friday am I woke up with tenderness in my sinus area under my eye and besides my nose, only on the right side. I had a flight later that day. When I got off the plane, it was much worse. The next morning my face was becoming puffy and slightly swollen. By Sunday the pain was now from my sinus area all the way down to my gum line. Most severe around the bottom of my cheek bone. The amount of swelling in my check and jaw area is insane. Everyone keeps saying its a tooth abscess, however I've not had any tooth pain at all. Even still when I put any pressure on the bottom of my teeth or the sides, there isn't any pain what so ever. I don't have dental insurance and would really hate to waste the money it will cost to go see one if thats not the case. Any suggestions of comments on this bizarre situation/problem??????

  1. Yes this sounds like you have a major bacterial infection in an inflamed tooth.  There is a possibility that the abscess can come out through your skin.  YOU NEED TO CALL THE DENTIST ASAP.  This will not get better without dental attention.  And to answer your question regarding the pain some people never experience pain with an abscessed tooth until it gets to this point.

  2. Hi there, I will try to help I am a dental assistant have been for 10 years.  There are many types of mouth abscesses.  The 2 most common are periodontal and endodontal abscess.  Periodontal Abscess has pain, yellow pus, and gingivitis (swelling of infected area).  Endodontal Abscess has pain on tooth upon chewing mainly, however if that tooth has been root canal treated you will most likely not experience pain because the nerve is gone.  If you don't see a abscess then sometimes its the following, night grinding, clenching, sinus or lack of flossing (bad hygiene).  The fact that you got on a plane made it worst because of the altitude (pressure).  Take a good look around that area see if you find anything abnormal.

  3. Dental Abscesses are serious, and you can actually die if they are left untreated.

This sounds like you have an abscess. The pain could be coming from the nerves..

Go to an emergency dentist (yes, emergency) or go to ER. They will prescribe you antibiotics.

  4. HAVING A DENTAL ABSCESS IS NOT  ALWAYS PAINFUL. BEST TO SEE A DENTIST A.S.A.P.
