  3. Not recommended; they are a skittish cat and require special care. Even in zoos, they are difficult to take care of. Kings did a long time ago, though! They had them around their property and often used them for hunting.

  4. Short answer:  No, cheetahs are an endangered species not native to this area.  On the off chance you acquire a cheetah it would not be a good idea anyway to keep it.

    Long answer:

.No, cheetahs are an endangered species not native to this area.  On the off chance you acquire a cheetah it would not be a good idea anyway to keep it. For starters, cheetahs (even cubs) need LOTS of room to run, so even if you have a giant backyard your neighbors might have a problem with a cheetah running around next door. Secondly, cheetahs are VERY territorial. If you have any cats in your house a cheetah will kill them; likewise, he/she might kill any smaller animals such as hamsters or gerbils. A cheetah may also pose a threat to any younger family members or neighbors with small children. Cheetahs also require very specific dietary needs; they cannot digest chicken and several other animals, so you would have to pay A LOT of money to get specially ordered meals.

If you truly care for these majestic cats, you can make a donation to the Cheetah Conservation Fund of Namibia. If you want a chance to see some cheetahs visit the Cinncinati Zoo- they have a GREAT cheetah program where they hold live shows with cheetahs. Finally, if you still want a cheetah, rent the Disney movie "Cheetah". It was made around the 1980's and shows how two LA teenagers moved to Africa and adopted a cheetah cub that they eventually had to give up. If you honestly love cheetahs, let them run free in their real home of Africa (maybe even take a Safari to see them? Because trust me, keeping a cheetah would cost just as much). If you're still convinced that you want a wild cat, why not buy a Savannah cat? Savannah cats are a cross-breed between servals (a close relative of the cheetah) and house cats. They're very beautiful and much safer than cheetahs. Best of luck whatever you decide! :D

  5. Not at all -- They are an endangered AND a protected species is the reason why no one can have one as a pet.

The cheetah suffers from a lack of genetic diversity in the wild and in captivity. They reproduce poorly, having infrequent litters with a low survival rate. They do not breed easily in captivity (unlike most other wild cats) and have a much shorter average lifespan than many species.

Obtaining permits to own or breed cheetahs is a difficult and expensive process even for top zoos; if you want a pet cheetah you are out of luck, but you can explore opportunities to help protect the future of these beautiful cats through the Cheetah Conservation Fund http://www.cheetah.org/
