Question:

Can you have a female robo dwarf hamster fixed? is that possible?

My boyfriend and i got what we THOUGHT were two male Robo Dwarf Hamsters from Petsmart about a month and a half ago. Tonight, to both of our surprise, my hamster had 4 babies. SO i was wondering if anyone out there knows if it is possible to get a female robo dwarf hamster fixed or spayed, whatever the proper terminology is? We'd very much like to keep the two of the hamsters, but we don't want anymore babies, and we're having to use a makeshift cage for the male in the next two weeks in an old aquarium.

Thanks for any light anyone can shed on this issue for me :)

  1. Depends on your vet. They can be. But it may cost more because of the size. Call around and see what you can find.

A fish tank makes a great cage for a hamster. You can also try the plastic storage bins from wall mart. That's what I use for my cages.

  2. yes, but I'm sure it's high dollar.

  3. you'd need an expert vet to do such a complex op on such a small creature and it could cost quite a large amount and be potentially fatal. Vets rarely spay hammies unless they have an infection for that very reason. If you have not already split your hammies up the female could be pregnant again - they can become pregnant within 24 hours of giving birth so I strongly suggest seperating them both as soon as possible. Make sure the babies are seperated too once their eyes are open as the males will also try and impregnate the mum. Unfortunately Robos are notoriously difficult to s*x and pet shops often get it wrong. The only sure fire way is by going to reputable hamster breeder (sorry, I'm in the UK so can't recommend anyone local)
