Question:

Can you have lead exposure by touching something with lead paint, like an old door?

For example, can touching the paint on a porch door made in 1968 and painted white, presumably with lead paint, cause the heavy metal to abrade onto your skin?

Happened to me, just a small touch, and the paint seemed to be in good condition. I washed my hand off when I got home, but just curious if any lead could've gotten into my body. Is this anything to worry about?

  1. The amounts of lead in the paint are relatively low and probably covered with newer "lead free" paint so touching it should be no problem. by the way, lead was used to create green so its present in green paint or colors where green was mixed in so white likely doesn't contain it.

The big danger is breathing in the dust when renovating.

Handling large quantities of lead over a long period of time may be an issue through absorbing it but small amounts are no problem anyway. I had toys made of lead when I was a kid. I had lead all over my hands from pockets full of air gun pellets. I have seen no effects and had an IQ of 158 last time I tested it.

  2. no problem. You have to get it into your body, and more than just a few atoms.

I have lead paint on all the woodwork in my condo. I don't worry about it. It has been repainted 3 or 4 times, so the lead paint is well underneath.
