  1. You can have a TiVo branded DVR with DirecTV and still be able to use it. If you buy a TiVo, you have to buy a subscription service with it, which runs about $10-15 USD/month. It will ask you what type of service you're using and connect to it's programming guide through TiVo.

I imagine the major problem would be deciding to spend the extra money per month to pay for a subscription when it's likely included with your DirecTV service. In my opinion, it's not much money, and it's very much worth it, as TiVo provides better support and more services with their DVRs than DirecTV does.

  2. You can use either but I would go with the DVR cause you will have to first buy a TIVO and pay a monthly fee, or just pay the monthly fee for dvr and have just one cable box not both box and TIVO

  3. DirecTV doesn't specifically market TiVo units anymore, but the receivers will still work on any account assuming you have the right cabling to support dual tuners (which you obviously do).

If you want another TiVo unit specifically, you would have to buy it. Ebay is a good place to look for them as you can usually get a good deal.

However, keep in mind that when you purchase a receiver that's been on someone else's account you will be required to pay $20 for a new access card (I could go into the details of why, but to keep it short it's for your protection on your bill). Plus, you will want to make sure that the receiver is not a leased receiver, so make sure the CSR double checks that before you activate it (they can do that with either the RID or Access Card number).
