Can you help find find this New York state beer? Please read below?

A few years ago, here in Ontario for a brief period of time, the liquor stores sold a red, trappist-style beer that was clearly a knock-off of Chimay. It came in large bottles, like Chimay and had an abv of 8%, I think. I forget the name. It was made in New York state and was really good, really, really good. It then disappeared from our Ontario stores. And it just goes to show, in spite of what many Canadians think, Americans can brew excellent beer, if they chose to. I will be in NY and PA next month. Does anyone know what brewery makes this beer?

  1. Ommegang Brewery, Cooperstown, New York.  Sorry they left your shelves.  Maybe Unibroue can console you, eh?  I'm over in Michigan and I've gotten to try several of theirs.  Good stuff.

    I wouldn't call Ommegang (or any other American-made Belgian style) a Chimay knock-off per se.  I would call it an American reproduction of Belgian strong ales.  

    Anyone who says Canada brews better beer than the U.S. must be limiting themselves to macrobreweries.  The U.S. brews some of the best beer in the world.  Try some imperial stouts, barleywines or double IPAs from the following breweries, and you will see what I mean:

    Three Floyds, AleSmith, Bells, Russian River, Lost Abbey, Stone, Founders, Kuhnhenn, Southern Tier, Dogfish Head, to name a few.
