Question:

Can you help identify this wild berry

This bush has been growing at the edge of my yard, right where some wetlands begin. It's about 4 feet tall, with 5"-6" long clusters of very dark blue/purple berries. It had white flowers earlier this season, and the twigs are bright red-pink-purple. I cut one of the berries open, and it was purple inside, with 10 relatively large seeds.

I live between the Hudson River and the base of the Catskill Mountains in eastern New York.

The closest thing I can find is the huckleberry, but the huckleberry doesn't seem to grow in clusters and I don't think it's native to this area.

Please help me before I go crazy! :o)

  1. You got me curious .... so about 20 minutes of "poking" around on the internet came up with "pokeweed".
