Okay, so I am going to be a sophmore next year and was wondering if I should join the swim team. My brother is on a summer team and seems to enjoy it. I wonder what goes in to swimming competitively. Also, the muscular guys in speedos is a plus!

  1. Do it! It burns more calories the most cardio machines(if your interested) If it not to late go to a pool and practice so your not dieing the first week

  2. i swim for my school, and next year will be my third year. swimming can be really hard, especially if u have practice before school. u need to be committed to it. if u dont swim for a week or so, your time will get much worse. and dont try to kill yourself working so hard cause others can swim faster than you. your real only competitor is the stopwatch.

  3. Well, swim team involves swimming all four of the strokes and not just freestyle. So you will swim backstroke, butterfly, and breastroke, and also IM (one of each stroke). During practice, you will swim a lot of yardage and laps, maybe some days it will equal to swimming about a mile or two. I don't know about your swim team but our swim team has morning swim practices, weekend practices, and morning dryland/exercise practices.

Practices will not have just swimming, the coaches will sometimes work on just kicking (with kickboard or fins), pulling (with a pool buoy), or some drills where you work to tone your stroke to get the right technique.

YOu will for sure be expected to swim in swim meets, where you race for time. Remember it's not really racing other people, but racing against yourself and time and you want to try your best to get the best time possible in your event.

Meets have many swim events you can swim, including all four strokes long distances and short distances and also fun relays you get to do with other members of your team.

Be expected to dive off a block and do a proper flip turn. If you don't know I'm sure they will teach you.

Invest in a durable swim cap and strong goggles that won't fly off when you drive. Also one piece swim suits or workout two pieces - no bikinis!

Don't be surprised if you still smell like chlorine after you shower.

You might be expected to swim with your period, depending how lenient your coach is. In the words of my coach "Deal with it."

Also, have fun! Swimming is a great sport and is very good for your health.

    Good Luck To YA!
