Can you help me choose a good digital camera?

I'm looking to buy a new digital camera, and don't know which one to get. I'm looking for the following:

-- Approx. $200 to spend

--8 mega-pixels

--Preferably an OPTICAL Image Stabilization

--Something that isn't slow as h**l

--Something that is relatively easy to use

--Must have video, ability to take pics in regular, black and white, sepia, etc.

I don't care if it takes a rechargeable battery or AAs. I don't know if getting 5x zoom or 3x zoom matters, if I'm only taking pics of scenery, friends, family, etc.

I have to purchase this camera at Best Buy because I have a gift card there and can't really afford to spend much out of pocket right now.

So, my choices are:

Nikon Coolpix S210

OIympus FE-340 (Although I heard it sucks!)

FujiFilm FinePix Z 100 FD

FujiFilm FinePix Z 20 FD

Canon Powershot A590IS (but I'm worried cause this thing is pretty bulky)

Please help!!!! :)

  1. My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but it impress everyone with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic. Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner's manual.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD display. Would suggest that you find one that has an optical view finder because the LCD is almost impossible to see in bright sun.

This could be the best slim line!

FUJIFILM - FinePix 10.0-Megapixel Digital at $249  is more camera for the money.

Wide-angle shooting, a 12x optical zoom and picture stabilization mode combine in this camera for exceptional shooting performance, even at a distance. Plentiful scene modes, autofocus and automatic white balance controls make this camera a snap to operate. Life time Warranty (Parts & Labor)

The first link below will provide lots of information on most of the old and new cameras available today.

The second link will help you learn to clean the camera and battery contacts on any camera you buy. Digital Cameras require lots of power. If the contacts are not really good it can cause lots of problems.

  2. You can compare four of these side by side here---

    I couldn't find the Fuji Z100

Anyway, I would definitely get the Canon A590IS.  It is a good reliable company, and should take great pictures.  I have had an A540 for over 2 years and haven't had a bit of trouble with it.

As you can see, the Canon is the only one with a viewfinder, which you will find very valuable if you are taking pictures in bright sunlight, as the LCD display is worthless in sunlight.  You also get Image Stabiliztion which will help you to take sharp pictures.  The other cameras don't have that.  The Canon is also the only one that has both auto focus and manual focus, which means you will be able to use shutter and aperature priority, if you want to get a little more creative with your camera.

It may be a little more bulky than the others, but I honestly think you would be getting a better camera.   You will need to buy a charger and rechargeable AA batteries.

  3. the cannon sd750 is usually on sale for about 179...it's a 7.1 mp but i've been using it to take pictures of cats, friends, and video of bands and it's working great...you can check out best buys website and shop by price and mp and features as well

  4. Fuji J10 It is on sale right now, and you get a pouch and an extra battery. Image stabilization and video! It is at Best Buy and you will have a little money left over.
