  1. I remember this speech and the night it was given like it was yesterday.

RFK was on the road campaigning in the deep south as a Presidential candidate.   This entire speech was ad hoc and extemporaneous.  Previously, there had been numerous incidents in '67 and '68 where severe violence and looting broke out in black ghettoes around the US.  There were 3 objectives to this speech: Respectfully convey the tragic news of MLK's death, defuse and prevent the backlash of emotional violence that might cause the crowd to begin rioting, challenge the crowd to focus and dedicate itself to the principles of MLK that were directed at making America a better nation for all.   The goal of "peace" on that particular day in that particular place was achieved by RFK.   Remember, RFK had previously been the attorney general for the US.

Mom, compare this real speech to the speeches you hear from the Democratic and Republican candidates today.

  2. the object is to prevent racial divide among white and black americans that would only further hurt the black movement for equal rights. it is essentially a call for continued belief in democracy as a better way of changing things rather than resort to violence.
