Question:

Can you help me find evidence to help me prove to my wife that it is not sanitary to leave a wet sponge lying?

around 24 hours a day 7 days a week. My wife throws a sponge into a tub filled with very soapy water that sits by the kitchen sink all the time to do the dishes. I say that is unsanitary and could make us sick, but that is the way she has always done it. That is the way most mexicans do it from what I have seen. Ideally, you could tell me about a government pamphlet printed in spanish that addresses this issue. Thanky

  1. You're not likely to find a government pamphlet, unless the state health department/food stamp office has one.

Bacteria grows in warm, moist places ... 7th or 8th grade science class.

Oprah show has done many segments over the last 20 years, showing microscopic evidence of the disgusting filth in places that'll freak you out, such as hotel bedspreads, soda cans, household sponges, etc.

I also found this site that might help:  http://www.realsimple.com/realsimple/con...

To remedy your sponge issue, the sponge can be tossed in the dishwasher with dishes, or microwave to kill germs/bacteria.

As far as getting sick, I would ... because I've never been exposed to that kind of bacteria.  If your wife has been exposed to those kinds of bacteria over the course of her entire life, possibly she's built up immunity, whereas it might put your or your children in a hospital.

  2. By a new sponge and do the washing up yourself, problem solved.
