Can you help me find the name of a book I read as a child?

I am looking for the name of a book that I read in grade 5 and that I cannot remember the name. The book takes place during the settlement of North America, and involves a young boy coming to North America possibly with an uncle.

The uncle turns out to be the bad guy of the story and there is something to do with mining I think. Near the end of the story the boy has to cut off his hand to escape from shackles. Also someone shoots and kills the dog that belong to a native american boy.
