Can you help me find the nationality of the last name Dunay (pronounced Doo-nay)? I think it's French, but I'm not quite sure. I need an educated guess, not just a random answer. Thank you for helping me!

P.S: This is not my last name, so it's hopeless for you to try to stalk me.

  1. Try Scotland.

  2. It does sound French, but here's something you might want to check out: http://genforum.genealogy.com/dunay/mess...

    Dunay Name Meaning and History

Hungarian: habitational name for someone who lived in a settlement on the Danube river (Hungarian Duna). In some cases the name may simply be ornamental.

    Ukrainian: see Dunaj 1.

Jewish (Ashkenazic): variant of Dunaj 2.

Possibly an Americanized spelling of the unexplained French surname Duné or Dunet, a habitational name from a place in Indre so named, from Gallic dunum ‘hill’, later ‘fortress’, ‘stronghold’.

    Well there is the French.

  4. This is what www.ancestry.com has to say about the name as a surname, but there is nothing on the site for it as a christian name, sorry.
