HELP!!!

I have bought a secind hand sewing machine. When i try to use it, it doesn't work. I have opened it up so i can see what is happening. It goes somethign like this.

The needle goes down in to the bottom bit to pick up the other thread but when it carries the needle thread through it doesn't push it far enough to the other side so that it comes back up if that makes snese. So i try and make it do it by hand and having that sectin open. THen if i come to sew, it goes down adn gets stuck and wont come back at all. If i look at teh bottom section it doesn't even come round.

If this makes sense i will be ever so chuffed that i go thtis far. Now for the next bit....can it be fixed. If so can you help me as there are no loacal machine fixers in my area. I would be ever pleased.

Thanks a million and if you need me to go through any point again, let me know as i know it is a tricky one to describe!!lol

  1. The machine is probably overdue for its tuneup and cleaning. It needs to be done every year. These aren't things the user can fix.

Every area has someone who can fix machines. You may have to drive 20 miles, but there are plenty of sewing machine repair shops.

  2. Your timing is out, I'd stake my life on it! No amount of oiling or new needles will fix it! Only a trained engineer can do this I'm sorry to say. If you want to e-mail me what area you are in (assuming it's in the UK) I can put you in touch with a local engineer if you'd like. The timing would be fixed under a normal service so shouldn't be expensive.

    Good Luck otherwise!

  3. It sounds like it needs a good tune up from a shop, which means the timing may be off or it may just need a good cleaning. If you want to try to fix it yourself,  look up online a manual for your machine. Also make sure the needle isn't bent, as that would not allow it to go all the way down.  The feed plates may not be in correctly, either. The hole that the needle goes into may be off center a bit and that will throw things off also.  Try checking blurtit.com and type in sewing machine repair, or sewing machine manual for your model. You can also go to your public library and see if they have a book on maintenence and repair of sewing machines.  By the way, if you have a quilting shop or vacuum cleaner shop nearby, they sometimes fix sewing machines.  I get mine cleaned, etc., at a very nice quilting shop.

  4. You don't say if this is a front loading bobbin that you pop into a separate bobbin case and load into the machine, or if this is the drop in type where you drop the bobbin in through an opening on the top...

The first thing you need to do is clean and lubricate the machine.  Make sure there is no lint caught between the tension disks and thin and around the bobbin case and feed dogs.  For where and how to lubricate, look in the sewing machine manual.  DO NOT attempt to lubricate the machine if there are no instructions for doing so.

Once you have done this, give the machine a new needle, and rethread the machine, making sure that you have the needle in the right way round and follow the thread path exactly.  You also need to make sure that the bobbin is in the bobbin case the right way round so that the lower thread can unwind correctly.

If this does not solve the problem, you may need to take the machine in for servicing and a timing check.
