  1. Just to confuse you further, I'm with Vodafone (prepaid). For $A49 I get $320 worth of calls/text.

  2. G'day,

It seems that you have got lots of answers and opinions.  Now this is for a more balanced view...

There are abt 6 mobile phones networks in Australia offering prepaid.

Telstra has the widest & best coverage, so consequently they are the most expensive.

3 (three) network is actually pretty good as it is combining the service of 3 and Telstra networks.  However you will need to have 3G handset (I take it you are bringing your own from Indo)?

The worst coverage from what I've heard is still Vodaphone.

If you want to check all available plans for prepaid, just go to the URL below as you can check them from one spot.  Of course you do not need to sign up thru them.

Hope this helps.  Have a good trip and selamat datang to Melbourne :)  In case that you need to know what to pack... some tips are also included in the url below.

  3. I use ISIM it is owned by Optus, one of the 2 biggest phone companies. Prepaid, no flagfall, billed in one second increments @ 39 cents a minute last time I looked. Mine is automatically topped up by $20 when my balance drops below $20.I bought a phone off Ebay outright which was not locked to any company, you gotta pay to unlock it otherwise.steve (Melbourne, Australia)

  4. optus

  5. I've been a telstra customer for years. I've always had great service from them. I've heard other people on other networks complain about this and that. I don't know much about prepaid i'm on a $20 monthly plan and get $20 of free calls and only have to pay $10 a month unless I go over $20  of my call allowance. On top of that I get my hour where I choose 1 hour in 24 that i can make as many free calls i can fit in anywhere any phone in Australia each call must be no longer than 20 minutes. This same plan if you want a new mobile phone from Telstra then you wont get the $10 discount you will pay $20 a month with $20 of free calls. I had a choice when I chose my hour, instead I could've had 3 minute call for free to one number of my choice or so many text messages. You probably need to get established with a permanent address first before you get your phone. Telstra have many plans and I've always found it easy to get hold of them

  6. I am also Vodafone.

The best thing with vodafone is they charge per second not per 30 seconds like most others. You pay 32cents per 30seconds plus 20cents flagfall. Talk for 31 seconds, only pay for 31 seconds.

You can buy a Vodafone sim card for $2 and have two prepaid choices for credit.

Standard credit, get what you pay for plus a choice of txter (free sms), night talker, talker, 365days, etc. Standard credit lasts for 60days except on the 365days. You can recharge $20 + recharges above $30 extend your expiry date and give you the bonus option.

I pay $30 and get $30 credit, 60 free txt as well as 120 vodafone - vodafone mins.

Vodafone - vodafone minutes let you call other vodafone customers for 20cents.

Caps. Pay less and get more. Pay $29 and get $160 credit, pay $49 and get $320 credit and so forth. You have 30 days to use this credit.

Vodafone's reception is good and so is there customer service. If you plan to live rural though, then Telstra is the best option.

  7. <puts hand up>... another Telstra Prepaid customer here.

I've been with Telstra for years.  I do a lot of country-miles, and I have never been out of range of a tower (even out in the middle of the Gippsland Lakes).

You only pay for what you use (ie no flagfall, etc.); and better yet, you also have free international roaming.  I simply top-up my account whenever it starts getting low; and I can pick-up my activity statement online.

As for whether Telstra Prepaid is the "cheapest"... that's a matter of opinion.  I'm a person that prefers reliability.  If my car breaks down in the middle of nowhere (which it has), I find great comfort in knowing my Telstra mobile always has coverage.
