Can you help me identify this moss?

i took this photo of a moss growing on a tree outside my house and was just wondering if anyone knew the species. i know absolutely nothing about botany by the way. if having info about the habitat helps, i live in upstate new york, between nyc and albany.

  1. It looks like it might be some young burned ground moss, but I'm not entirely sure since I can't find my book.  I am positive that there is some crack lichen mixed in under it though.


  2. It is most probably  Polytrichum  moss

    I am not sure as my attemts to get a photo deid not yield desired result.
