Question:

Can you help me navigate a California DMV to change my name?

The last time I was at the DMV was to get my license, and my parents took care of it, really. I’ve heard horror stories, and just want to get a jump on navigating through my name change. I can’t really afford the time off from work, so I prefer to go in right when it opens at 8:00. I work at 9:00, and I’m not considered late until 9:30. The DMV office is approximately 10 minutes from my work. According to their website, appointment wait time is 8 minutes, and walk-in wait time is 38 minutes. The form I need to fill out has to be filled out there (an original, not from online). I would like to go in early next week, and they don’t have any appointments earlier than 9:00 for a couple weeks. What should I expect? When should I arrive, and do they have a line forming before 8:00? What do I do immediately upon entering? Do they still have a “take a number” system, where I can grab the number, and fill out the form while waiting? And let’s say is does take 38 minutes… how much longer will I be there for, submitting paperwork? Realistically, could I leave before 9:15? Seriously, I’m having major issues here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  1. Another way to try is to check out what days they are open late or Saturdays. Also, go by at 7:30 AM and see if there is a line out front.

They still have their 'happy faces' on at 8.

  2. I would swing by there on your way to work and just check it out.  Some DMV offices are much busier than others.  If you live in a big urban area the wait will be much longer.  Take a look on Monday then you will know what to expect when you go in and you can pick up the form and fill it out at home.
