  1. 8g - (5 - 2g) = 15

    distribute the -1 (i.e. the - in front a parentheses can also mean a -1)

    once you do that you get 8g - 5 + 2g=15

    add the gs together and you get 10g -5 = 15

    add 5 on both sides and you get 10g = 20

    divide the 10 on both sides and you get g = 2

  2. 8g - (5 - 2g) = 15

    Since x - (y - z) is equal to  x + [-1](y - z), the equation becomes:

    8g + [-1](5 - 2g) = 15

    Do the multiplication next:

    8g - 5 + 2g = 15

    Add 5 to each side:

    8g - 5 + 5 + 2g = 15 + 5

    Which becomes:

    8g + 2g = 20

    Perform the addition on the left side:

    10g = 20

    Divide each side by 10:

    10g / 10 = 20 / 10

    Resulting in:

    g = 2

    Check your work:

        8g - (5 - 2g) = 15

    8[2] - (5 - 2[2]) = 15

        16 - (5 - [4]) = 15

               16 - (1) = 15

                      15 = 15

    As the Greeks would say, "quid est domini," it is proven.

  3.       8g - (5 - 2g) = 15

    =)   8g - 5 + 2g = 15     (remove the brackets)

    =)   10g + 5 =15           (add 8g and 2g)

    =)   10g = 20

    (move the -5 over to the other side thus adding 5 yo 15 making it 20)

    =)   g = 20/10               (get rid of the 10 by dividing 20 by 10)

    =)   g = 2                      (then you get the value of g being 2)
