Question:

Can you help me out girls? - Mom Won't Let Me Use Tampons?

I have used pads since 6th grade (I'm 16 yrs now) and I want to try tampons, but my mom and aunts won't let me! (They freaked out when I even mentioned it one day).

I tried to convince my mom, but everytime, all my aunts tell her no (even though I told them and showed them info on how safe they are if you use them right).

Should I just try them anyway? They seem more useful because pads are so unsanitary and I play sports. (My mom actually has some she got free with a purchase of pads, but she never used them - Tampax regular I believe it is).

  1. Try to find out exactly why your mom & aunts don't want you to use tampons. Then get some research to back yourself up - tampons are perfectly safe if used correctly, and would be especially useful to you since you play sports... you know this to be true, but get some study-proven, documented facts to back it up. Your mom & aunts can hardly refuse that. Or, if they have issues with you in particular using tampons (if they think you're irresponsible or something like that), bring up times that you have proven yourself to be responsible. As a very last resort, tell them that it's YOUR body, not theirs, and you reserve the right to use tampons if you wish. And during any conversations you have with them, do not be rude. Explain your point of view calmly; think before you speak.

Try not to go behind your mom's back, though. It'll just lessen her trust in you.

You sound like you've got a good head on your shoulders, and your mom & aunts should trust you with your decision. (Not saying they WILL... but they should.)

    Good luck. =)

(By the way - speaking from experience, plastic applicator tampons are the most comfortable to use... cardboard applicators kind of hurt.)

  2. maybe you can  buy some for yourslef and have them ina bag where she cant see them  and then trought them out when you get out of the house in garbage can ... thats what my sister useto to until my mom found out and had no ther choice then to let her use them yet she doesnt let me use them my sister (14) me (13)

  3. Also a hint: get one of your girl friends to help you, it's better putting one in your first time if you have supportive help and someone with experience using tampons.

  4. Tampons can be very useful. I'd ask your mom why she won't let you use them. Maybe there's a cultural reason as well? She is more than likely worried about toxic shock syndrome, which, if you've read the pamphlets, you should know all about. It sounds like your mom doesn't use them either. It's possible that she thinks they're unsanitary.

  5. I know it's wrong, but do you have your own room?  A car?  A secretive place? If you do, get tampons and hide them there... who needs to know, right?

I'm 13 and i HATE pads.. so i use tampons. They can be really uncomfortable though, if you dont put it in right. Read the paper that comes in the box.
