My Chinese friend who came to America since 5th grade has trouble with SRI test. He for somehow always get like 735 or 680. He said he doesn't want to be in literacy skill class again for high school. He said he needs tips on how to do better at it. This test has killed him a lot on courses he could take. He was going to be put at strategies for better reading skill class next year. He is then 2 years behind in world language!!

  1. Tell him to slow down and read/reread everything carefully (the test shouldn't be timed). When he's not sure which answer choice is correct, try to rule out the ones he knows couldn't possibly be the right answer, then make his best guess on the ones that are left.

To prepare for his next SRI, he probably needs to improve his vocabulary. Doing crossword puzzles is good practice for this. So is keeping a log of any new words he finds, and looking up their meaning in a dictionary, then trying to use them in his writing or conversations.

He should also increase the amount of independent reading he does every day, and talk about what he reads with others (you, possibly). This will help him think more deeply about what he reads, and help him to clear up any misunderstandings he may have about what he reads.

  2. Why are you asking this question in Special Education? Don't you know that Special Education is for students with mental/physical disabilities?

  3. Is he able to speak english well enough to access the curriculum. If not then maybe he should try and get in to an ESL program as this would help his literacy but also help him overall.

If he's adequate at reading English he could try reading out loud to himself, a friend, a pet or a stuffed toy (if he has any.)

He could also try getting audio versions of the books etc which he has to read and listen to them while reading.
