Can you help me trace my ancestor?

My ancestor is Edward Ward born abt 1826 in Staffordshire- he was married to Sarah Jane Pagett, she was born 1835 in Tipton( iv'e got her!)but Edward died in 1870 in USA(got all that!) but I can't find his parents or his and Sara Jane's marriage.

It would be in the Staffordshire area, as thats where they lived. Hope you can help me -Thanks

  1. Besides the parish registers or civil registers have you tried the census returns say for 1841 and 1851?  Many of those on CD are also indexed and so were the copies done manually before, by local family history societies.


  2. you need from his death cert. his age because it puts him as only 44 . you would need church records for Tipton to get their marriage . 1853 looks good for the marriage with her at 18 and him at 27 , guess but hopefully a good one , it would be usual to be married in the females church so I suspect Tipton would be a good shot . No birth cert ?

    addendum 1) Religion and sectarian protestant group would be useful to get church .

  3. I am almost certain that  Edwards dad was Charles Ward aged 50 in 1841 also born in Staffordshire, his given birth year was 1791, his trade was given as a *cooper* barrel maker. His mum was Sarah also born in Staffordshire  her birth year was 1796 and she was noted as being 45 in 1841.

    Here are the marriage details for Edward and Sarah Jane. They married in West-Bromwich in the O/N/D quarter of 1854 the GRO  details are Volume 6B and Page number 863, this information came from the BMD section on www.ancesrty.co.uk  and you can apply at the West -Bromwich register office  for the marriage certificate or the GRO  http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
