3. Why do you suppose humans circulate the monosaccharide, glucose, in their blood, rather than employing a disaccharide like sucrose as a transport sugar, as plants do?

4. Of all possible DNA nucleotide sequences, what sequence of base pairs would dissociate most easily into single strands if the DNA duplex were heated gently? Explain your reasoning.

5. Imagine you had made an RNA copy of each strand of a DNA double helix. If you were now to mix these two RNA single-strand copies together, do you think they would forma double stranded RNA molecule? Why do you suppose DNA is double-stranded, while RNA is single-stranded? (Please note that recent research has revealed exceptions to this—we will discuss at a later date!)

  1. 3.  Animals need energy quickly, because they move.  Glucose can be used directly in cellular respiration.  Sucrose would require an additional step to convert it into monosaccharides.

    4.  A sequence with only A and T in it.  A binds to T with two hydrogen bonds.  G binds to C with three hydrogen bonds.  The bonding between an A and a T is weaker, and more easily broken, than between a G and a C.

    5.  I have no idea.  Want me to make something up?  Okay.  This is totally made up.

    > do you think they would form a double stranded RNA molecule?

Probably not.  The -OH group that RNA has that DNA doesn't is positioned in such a way to slightly sterically hinder the formation of double-stranded RNA.  It's enough so that long pieces of RNA won't self-anneal to form double stranded RNA.
