  1. Do you mean Father Hennepin?

    Most likely it was preach to the heathens and find new lands for the French.  The Catholic monks  who explored the New World  were a hardy group.  No maps, no GPS.

    He was have been driven by an inner  desire to see new lands and this was accommodated by the need of the French government to survey the new continent.

    He discovered the Falls of St Anthony at the upper reaches of the Mississippi.

    So if he did have a job description, it went beyond the normal one of a Catholic priest.
