Can you help me with a bedwetting problem?

My six year old still wets the bed frequently enough that he needs to wear a pullup to bed at night.

We make him go potty before bed and limit what he drinks for a few hours before he goes to bed.

We have given him a quarter for each dry pull up in the mornings, and we have taken him to a pediatric urologist who offered a daily medication.

We talked it over and decided to not medicate him, and hope he will outgrow it. It's been 6 months and I'm afraid that it is hurting his self esteem (he also has a temper control problem - could be related).

I was a bedwetter until I turned 8 and saw a hypnotist. After the hypnotist I got a terrible bladder and kidney infection. I was VERY sick in the hospital and had a surgery to enlarge the urethra. It worked, but they don't do that surgery anymore. I wish they would- I swear by it!

Should we go back and get the medication due to the effect it might have on his self-esteem?

  1. I have a son that had the same issue.  The doctors actually recommend that you wake them up also in the middle of the night.  Don't make a big deal of him wetting the bed, just tell him that it will get better.  When I don't wake my son up he does still wet the bed

  2. In most cases kids outgrow these problems but the problem is what to do in the meantime.

Besides medication from a urologist which more likely than not will have some side effects perhaps some natural remedies might help and these, in general, have no side effects.  You can find further information in a web search for bedwetting + "natural remedies".

  3. sometimes medication like that has bad side affects so unless you dont want those side affects i would just wait till he outgrows it,

  4. My initial reaction is to say no wait hold on don't do it!  But now I've thought it through and perhaps you should.  What I would ask you is, why did you wet the bed yourself?  Was there a psychological reason or a physical reason?  I wet the bed and even myself until I was around 8 - the doctors told my mother i was traumatised, which was accurate - things were very difficult for us back then.  In those days people were ignorant about these things so life went on.  My self esteem was i nthe gutter and I had a terrible problem with it in primary school.   My point is, if there's a reason other than physical perhaps that needs resolved first.  If you're really sure this is a physical thing, then perhaps the medication can help but I'd really research what it is & any side affects.

  5. Im only 15 so i am no expert but maybe you should just to be safe. If it happens frequently also it may be an emotional/social issue that he is experiencing.
