  1. Check out Winston Churchill who spoke brilliantly on the subject.

An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last.   - Winston Churchill (1874–1965), British statesman, writer. quoted in Reader’s Digest (Pleasantville, N.Y., Dec. 1954).

In this speech , Churchill first uses the term Iron Curtain.

    Sinews of Peace

    March 5, 1946

    Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri

From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia, all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere, and all are subject in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and, in many cases, increasing measure of control from Moscow.

Here are two quotes from Harry S. Truman who was president at the beginning of the Cold War.

"I Suppose that history will remember my term in

office as the years when the Cold War began to

overshadow our lives.  I have hardly a day in office

that has not been dominated by this all-embracing

struggle. And always in the background there has

been the atomic bomb.  But when history says that

my term of office saw the begining of the Cold War,

it will also say that in those eight years we have

set the course that can win it."

"The Soviet Union does not have to attack the

United States to secure domination of the world.

It can achieve its ends by isolating us and

    swallowing up all our allies."

    I hope these help you.

  2. From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. Winston Churchill (1946)

We're eyeball to eyeball, and I think the other fellow just blinked. Dean Rusk

President Reagan fuelled the spirit of America. His smile, his optimism, his total belief in the ultimate triumph of democracy and freedom, and his willingness to act on that belief, helped end the Cold War and usher in a new and brighter phase of history. Colin Powell

We helped keep the Cold War cold. . . .A war without casualties cannot be as famous as a horrible war, but it is preferable. Edward Teller

We had a wonderful record on the hydrogen bomb. We tested it, perfected it and never used it - and that served to win the Cold War. Edward Teller

We didn't win the Cold War, we were just a big bank that bankrupted a smaller bank because we had an arms race that wiped the Russians out. Norman Mailer

Let us not be deceived - we are today in the midst of a cold war. Bernard Baruch (speech given in 1947)

Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you. Nikita Khrushchev (said to Western diplomats in 1956)

The Cold War isn't thawing; it is burning with a deadly heat. Communism isn't sleeping; it is, as always, plotting, scheming, working, fighting. Richard M Nixon

When, in the late 1940's, we faced a global Cold War against another system of ideological fanatics certain that their authoritarian values would eventually rule the world, we prevailed in time. We prevailed because we exercised patience as well as vigilance, self-restraint as well as self-defense, and reached out to moderates and modernists, to democrats and dissidents, within that closed system. Theodore Sorensen

We don't propose to sit here in our rocking chair with our hands folded and let the Communists set up any government in the Western Hemisphere. Lyndon Baines Johnson

The Cold War began with the division of Europe. It can only end when Europe is whole. George H W Bush

  3. Great quotes so far - I would add this one -

Ronald Reagan, then president, in some dramatic speech, you'll have to google it, but he said to the Soviet president, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"  And shortly thereafter, it did come down and the cold war was over.
