  1. I would rethink the dog tags idea completely.  My husband is also Army and many of the other officers have very strong feelings regarding something that is used to identify the dead in battle as a "cute" gimmic.

I've been to several officer's balls where this has been discussed.

A military wedding should be formal, not cutesy.  There are several great books directed at planning social gatherings for Military Etiquette.  Many are available through a PX or clothing sales.

I would recommend sticking with classy, not cutesy or kitschy.

  2. Please DON'T even consider dog tags. You will discover that Military wives associate dog tags with deployment and death. They are to identify dead or unconcious Soldiers and have no place in civilian life, or at a wedding.

We had a Military wedding and our save the dates, and invitations had ribbons in dark red and navy blue which are my husband's Regimental colours, and were our wedding colours.

  3. I would do magnets as well.  Unless you choose the exact design as the friend it's not a "rip off" of her idea or "unoriginal".   No two brides will choose the exact same details and magnets are just practical.   Stuff like cards or trinkets will get tossed into a drawer and lost or forgotten.  A magnet can be stuck right there on the fridge or coffee pot that they see daily.  At the very least include a magnet with whatever else you choose.

Perhaps a camo magnet with a plastic green army man?  If you refuse to do magnets then buy the big versions of the army men and use a fine point sharpie to write the information on his base or add a small tag around his neck (note:  the tag around the neck could be the magnetic part)
