  1. Yeah, I have to agree with Webwise. This sounds like latch hook and not crochet. Latch hook using a piece of mesh fabric full of small square holes and a latch hook tool. Whatever the "thing" is, it shouldn't be a gauge, because a gauge is what you measure the crocheted piece with. I don't think you would actually use it to "make" the item.

Check out this video I found on youtube to see if this is the craft that you are trying to figure out. It has a good rating. Hopefully, if this is your craft, it will help.

    Good Luck!

  2. Its hard to explain but if you have the first row done, your doing pretty good. When weaving the needle in and out of the yarn whole, loop the yarn around to make another yarn whole. Hold your thumb tightly on the string until you get the hang of it and when you get really good its like it naturally stays on there when you go faster.

Good luck and I hope I helped.

  3. I'm not sure what you are doing, but it sounds more like rug hooking to me.  You can get a latch hook that will keep the yarn on the hook until you pull it through a hole.  The latch opens and closes to hold and release the yarn.  A latch hook is available from almost any craft store that sells hooking supplies.

  4. it sounds like you have a loom?? Otherwise, i'm not sure what the "thing with the holes in it" is.... When i crochet, it is with a hook and yarn only.

I taught myself to crochet from videos on youtube. They are very simple and clear to follow. Type in 'crochet lesson' or just 'crochet' and search through the results, you will find tutorials for almost every stitich, and some even for whole projects (like a hat or beanie!)

  5. You need to explain a little more about what you are making. Here is a link that may help you.
