I'm completely stuck on the following questions. I have to show my steps, which I understand, but the problem has confused me.

Problem 1:

(it's written as a fraction, the underscore line I made is the Bar.)

Y2 - Y1

________

X2 - X1

Problem 2:

X1=2, X2,= 3Y1= 1,Y2=4

please help me.

  1. its 3

  2. 4-1/3-2= 3/1

    3/1= 3

  3. Okay, you need to substitute the numbers in for the variables.  Y1, Y2, X1, and X2 are the variables.  All you have to do is place what they equal into the problem like so:

    (4)-(1)

    _____

    (3)-(2)

Does that clarify it?  I think you've got it from there!

  4. I kind of want a little more info, but it looks like you're working on factoring out variables.

For problem 1, you'll want to remove any element that is common to both sides of the minus sign, leaving you with an equation. The first step should probably be:

    Y(y-1)

    _____

    X(x-1)

It's been a loooooooong time since I did algebra, so that's as far as I can get with that one.

Problem #2 looks a little strange. Is it a string of equal elements? I'm not clear on what the steps should be, but if it's like the first one, check for factorable elements.

    Good luck!

  5. I'm not sure what you are trying to solve or reduce.  From the looks of it I would substitute what X1, Y1, X2, Y2 are so the fraction would look like so:

    4 - 1

    ____

    3 - 2

From there it is simple subtraction and division.

I don't know how much algebra you know but

    Y2 - Y1

    ________

    X2 - X1

is a way to express slope or the "rise and run" of a line.  My guess is you are practicing using this form.

    Hope I helped

  6. this is not two problems but jsut one problem and ur 'problem 1'  is just an equation for hte gradient of a line. u just have to put in the values that are given below and find the gradient.

    gradient

    =(Y2-Y1)/(X2 - X1)

put in the values X1 = 2, X2=3, Y1=1 and Y2=4 in the above equation

    gradient

    = (4-1)/(3-2)

    =3/1

    =3

    so the answer is 3
