A recipe for salad dressing calls for a ratio or 2 parts vinegar to 3 parts oil. If you need to make 8 ounces of dressing, how many ounces of each ingredient do you need?

Can you please do it step by step. I called all my friends, they didn't get it, and we are REALLY desperate. Please...Please...PLEASE!!?!?!

Thank you from all of us!

  1. Greetings,

    all together there are 2 + 3 = 5 parts

    of which 2/5 of the total is vinegar = (2/5) * 8 = 16/5 = 3.2 oz vinegar

    and 3/5 of the total is oil = (3/5) * 8 = 24/5 = 4.8 oz oil

    Regards

  2. Assuming the given information is by weight.

    1) given the ratio

    vinegar : oil = 2 : 3

    2) That means if the total is 5oz, there is 2oz of vinegar and 3oz of oil.

    3) now the total weight is 8oz

    4) find how much the "5oz" is "expanded" to "8oz"

    factor (multiplier) =  8 / 5 = 1.6

    3) use this factor on the the vinegar and oil:

    vinegar = 2 x 1.6 = 3.2 oz

    oil = 3 x 1.6 = 4.8 oz

    4) check1: total should be 8oz:

    vinegar+oil = 3.2 + 4.8 = 8 oz

    check2: vinegar : oil = 2 : 3 (given)

    now 3.2 : 4.8 = 2 : 3  (divide 3.2 & 4.8 by the same number of 1.6 gives you 2 & 3, respectively)

    5) OK ! it is correct !
