a square hot tub is outlined by a 2-foot wide tile border. In an overhead view, the area of the hot tub and border together is 144 Square feet. What is the length of one side of the hot tub itself?

12 ft. Since the border and the area of the hot tub are taken in together to equal 144 sq. ft., and 12x12=144

since it is square, just take the sq root of 144, which is 12

ok so since the border is 2 all the way around it makes the side look like its realy 4 [which is counting both sides of the border] then if the area which is l x w you have to use variables

so

(4+x)*(4+x) = 144

144 is the given area

and the first 4+x is the length and the second is the width

so then you get

(x+4)^2=144

square root both sides and u get

4+x=12

subtract 4 to both sides and you get

x = 8

this is your answer ill try to draw it again
