  1. Possibly because there are often lower expectations from those around the child.  However, I have often found that kids would out perform  expectations ( overachieve)  when given challenging instruction, appropriate practice, and a supportive atmosphere.  It is my personal belief that all kids are gifted in some way or another.  Finding and developing those gifts help children develop confidence and independence.  Remember, there are different types of intelligence and the traditional tests only attempt to measure a few. So I have taught " retarded" children to read, to do fractions, to design quilts, to cook nutritiously, to band birds, to train dogs, to ride horses ( rodeo queen one year!), basic first aid , to speak basic conversational Spanish, to raise mealworms , make their own Power Points etc.  Sometimes they can come up with great ideas when working with a group on the challenge obstacle course, I guess because they are not always aware of the "box"  so they are more likely to think outside the box. I may have had to teach something more than once or use high interest activities, but all of my  students have learned! Many of them are grown , married , with jobs and family.   One young lady once told me that the most important things she learned were don't shake the baby, don't drink or do drugs, feed the kids good food not junk food,  get plenty of sleep, and to read to the kids a lot.  Not bad lessons for any parent!

The websites below may give you some ideas on how to motivate retarded children.
