Question:

Can you help to re-home a dog in NSW?

I have a friend that has to re-home a 2 year old female dog. She keeps getting out of the yard because they don't spend enough time with her. I know that it is just a behavioral issue but they aren't willing to take the time to work with her. Does anyone know where she can surrender the dog without it being killed?

  1. Good luck... There are a few no-kill shelters in NSW but they are very selective in what dogs they will take - thats how they get to be no-kill shelters, they turn away the dogs that are "too hard" to rehome, like dogs that escape yards!  It also depends a lot on the age, size and cuteness of the dog. A small fluffy female dog under 1 year of age has a pretty good chance of being accepted, while a large black male dog over 5 years has next to none.

The RSPCA will accept any dog, but they have a behaviour assessment stage before the dog is put up for adoption. If the dog is a known escaper (jumps fences over 5 foot or destroys normal dog proof fences) it is  likely to fail this assessment process and therefore be euthanised. It will also fail if it shows escaping behaviour during the assessment. The sad fact is that very few people want to take on a dog with problems like that (do you want to??), if the RSPCA was to keep these dogs then they would just sit in a kennel with no one adopting them, becoming more and more stressed and frustrated, and the RSPCA shelters would run out of room even more quickly than they do already.

Whatever option they take with her I'd advise that they are honest. Even though they may fool someone into taking the dog by neglecting to tell them about the escaping the dog will suffer for it. Everytime it gets out of the yard it is at risk of injury or death or of harming someone. If the next owner gets sick of her then she could suffer even more - be dumped, abused, neglected.

Your friends could advertise the dog but i'd suggest they put a price on her as they don't want just anyone (piggers, dog fighters) to come and get her. They should also give the new owners (if anyone is interested) as much information as possible about the dog including her escaping behaviour.

This is what happens when people get a dog without thinking about the long term responsibilities that come with owning one.... Its always the dog that suffers.

  2. well theve had a dog for 2 YEARS! what the h**l were they thinking of getting a dog if they didn't have the time for it!

  3. Killing the dog is the wrong option! Give it to the SPCA, or post a AD on the newspaper to sell it away. Killing a dog because it has behavioral issues is never the option, plus it's illegal. Give the dog to a friend, but NEVER make the dog a stray. It's going to suffer and die, or be found but those chances are low.

  4. Where I live there are a lot of adoption agencies that will take them. I had a dog that we had to give up because she wasn't meant for an apt and we weren't going to make her suffer threw it. I called a place called dream power and I took her up to a petsmart for an adoption day thing. Well no one took her that day, so the lady that watched her all day fostered her and ended up keeping her and she's a happy camper now. There are quite a few place that I think can help. Tell her to look up Dream power. Not sure if they are where you are but its worth a try. Good luck.
