  1. How about a Jade plant?  They're very adaptable to any conditions, and don't need a lot of care.  Having one by the front door is good for attracting money according to chinese tradition

  2. go and ask at the garden centre.

  3. Ferns like shade and shelter and last all year.

  4. What is most natural for your area is the ones that will last the longest for sure.  Cedars always do well and take well to trimming.

  5. A potted palm is easy to look after and looks good - I've seen them at local garden centre at height of about 2 feet above soil level.

  6. try a "tree heather" will make a 3' wide 4' high plant flowers late summer, evergreen ~easily trimmed to shape~some have coloured foliage.

    hope this helps.

  7. Firstly, if you are talking about outside then please don't try a Jade plant as this won't survive the winter (sorry to that contributor). Not all "palms" will survive the winter either.  A Camelia is a good suggestion. You could try an Azalea or my favourite a Japanese Maple. If it is not too shady you could try a Daphne or even a Hydrangea (though this may be too big). Your garden centre should be able to help you to pick a plant that will be suitable for the space and conditions. Remember that pot plants require regular watering in hot/dry conditions.  No problem this year then, Lol.

  8. A Camellia is great for a pot for many years. It only flowers about March but its nice,
