Question:

Can you help with breathing?

I have a big problem while I try to breathe when I am swimming. I know you are supposed to blow out your nose and inhale through the mouth. I can`t blow out my nose because after I get just a little air out it seems like there is a plug in there that prevents me from pushing any more air out. Any suggestions?

  1. Forget that nose thing.  If you are talking about doing the crawl stroke you simply exhale by mouth when you rotate your torso and head to put your face in the water.  Don't hold your breath.  It's a rythym.  As soon as your face starts to turn with the nose pointing towards the pool bottom start your exhale. This exhale should start before your breathing side arm's hand is about next to your ear and moving foreward to enter the water.  As your head is rotated with the face and nose pointing towards the bottom the water should be hitting your middle forehead.  If the water is covering your head, your head is too low and you are tucking you chin. If you can see where you are swimming to your head is too high and this will nake your feet sink, thus slowing you down a lot.  Red Cross swimming books should explain this with illustrations.  Forget that nose thing.  I'm not saying you should only breath through the mouth alone.  Use your nose to help exhale if that works, but use the nostrals as a secondary exhaust.  Haven't you seen some swimmers using a nose clip?  How to they exhale when they are using the nose clip?  Through da mouth, that's how.  Good luck, after you practice a lot it will come easy for you. Remember do not hold your breath at any time, it's a pattern you will learn.

  2. well when your under water , remeber your not on land breathing in and out normally , your in water , it's different when breathing in and out of your nose under water , keep blowing out of your nose all the time , you need to feel those oxygen bubbles , just like that !you could try breathing out with your mouth but don't inhale  then you'll choke or drink in that water which will make you cough,  , and we don't want that happening , but just ehale , but thats not such a good idea , breathing through your nose is much quicker ! well good luck

  3. OKAY SO IF YOUR UNDER THE WATER YOU CAN JUST BLOW OUT YOUR NOSE JUST LIKE YOU NORMALLY WOULD BUT IF IT HELPS YOU COULD BREATHE OUT YOUR MOUTH LIKE YOU ARE BLOWING BUBBLES.  YOU ONLY HAVE TO BREATHE OUT TO GET RID OF CARBON DIOXIDE SO THAT WHEN YOU COME UP TO BREATHE IT IS QUICKER, EASIER AND LESS FREQUENT.  I DON'T KNOW WHY YOU CAN'T BLOW OUT OF YOUR NOSE BUT YOU SHOULD TRY TO BREATHE OUT YOUR MOUTH.  HOPE THIS HELPS :)
