Question:

Can you hook up a desktop to a LCD TV?

I have a Toshiba LCD HDTV television, and in the manual it says that you can hook up your PC (personal computer) to it, but the picture shows a laptop. I have a laptop, but I was wondering if I can hook up my desktop to it also? If so, what are some of the things I'm going to need to do? Suggestions welcomed, but please make them easily understandable because I'm not a computer genius.

  1. all you need is a s-video cord....all most all laptop have them..most pc do but some dont, look at the back of your pc by the video card is and if the s-vid plug is there you can, if not then you cant.....

  2. I'm guessing your tv has a VGA input. You could get one of these splitters http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2-MONITOR-TO-1-P...

That way you can hook your pc up to your tv but still have it hooked to your pc monitor.

Even if you have an s-video output on your pc, the vga output will give you a better picture.

*These connections are for video only. For sound, check to see if there is an 3.5 mm audio jack with the vga input on the tv. If so, get a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable and run it from the pc's headphones jack to that jack on the tv.

*note the splitter has male/female ends so you will need to get another vga cable (male/male) plus use the one you have running to your monitor now.

  3. Buy a VGA or DVI cable or even HDMI if your computer supports HDMI.

  4. If your TV has an VGA input, then you will need a VGA splitter if you plan to use your regular monitor AND your TV at the same time:

If you have a VGA input on the TV and you want to use only the TV as your monitor then all you need is a VGA cable.

The other answerers are right too - there is always a way to do it if you have the right cables or converter box.  If you want the best resolution from your PC, you will want to use VGA or HDMI if possible.

  5. You'll have to look at the back of your desktop for the proper plug-in.  It could be s-video.  My video card has a DVI slot, and my LCD TV has an HDMI slot; I was able to find an HDMI-to-DVI cable which I used to connect the two.  However, I still have to have a separate set of speakers plugged into the back of my PC as the sound doesn't transfer.
