I am staying at a ladies house to dogsit her show dogs (she has 13 salukis and i have to dogsit 9 of them while she shows the other 4.)

i have a laptop that i brought with me. She has internet (obviously) via a DSL modem. it has an Ethernet port in the back which her computer is hooked up too. her computer and her modem are both like 45 years old. :( she does NOT have a router.

Is there anyway i can configure my computer or something to hook up to her modem via ethernet and get online?

when i try, it says i am connected with limited activity.

i know dsl is different from cable with the ISP adresses or something along those lines.

i am just wondering if there is anyway at all for me to get online on MY computer via HER dsl.

Thanks.

  1. I bet she did not buy her computer in the 60s. ;)

Maybe the 80s, but not the 60s.

So, get a $20 network adaptor, netgear or brand X. They work great:  http://www.overstock.com/search?keywords...

Load the software, then reboot and plug in the adaptor. Any usb port is fine.

You will see her signal if she set it to broadcast. If not look at all the other signals within 200 feet of your laptop.

Pick one. It made my older HPs wireless.

Buy her something nice. You are using her dsl.

  2. If it connects to the jacks, then all you have to do is turn off the DSL and the laptop for about 30 seconds (just to make sure), and then turn each on one by one, starting with the DSL and going down the line. By the way, make sure that the DSL is completely up before you turn the next thing on, this means waiting until all the lights have come back on, no matter how long it takes.

If by chance it takes longer than 3 minutes, turn it off, and then try again. But I doubt it wont work, I've done it loads of times, and it always has came back on.

  3. reboot the DSL modem

    hey i'm not a dead nut..lol

yea i forgot about setting her's back up when your finished..sorry

  4. Rich is dead nut. Plug yourself in and restart the Modem (pull the plug, put it back it). Just make sure you do the same thing for her when she gets back!
