Can you hook up surround sound to a 26' vizio hd tv?

I recently purchased a Vizio 32". The only audio out on the thing is an digital optical audio out. I had an old receiver and discovered you really can't convert digital to analog easily so I purchased a receiver with an optical in. That was the only way I got it to work. Sounds great now, though!
