No picture, but about 1.5 inches, buzzing around in Montgomery County MD. Appears to have red wings and yelloww/ black stipes- some type of bee, maybe? Seen carrying another bug around, almost as big as itself.

  1. I am almost positive it is a kind of Cicada-eating bee. I don't know the name of it but our neighborhood is swarming with these things! I don't think they sting--they just come out during cicada season and feed on them. I think the bug you're seeing it carry around is a cicada. They will go away when cicada season is over.

*Edit: Cicada season varies with your region. There are different types of cicadas...the annual kind, which is most common and probably what you're dealing with. If you do some detective work you might find the shells of the little buggers stuck to things like tree trunks, sides of retaining walls, etc. They live underground and come up at night to mate and lay their eggs then die (what a life). Do a little research on the internet...it's really quite interesting. There are other cicadas which cycle like 19 years--that's kind of cool. Never had an interest in bugs, but you never know where homeschool adventures will take you!
