I have a friend that got this bird and was told he was about 30yr old and was a scarlot macaw, and his leg band said he was an import, he is not a friendly bird so my friend is unable to check the band to see what it say's. And my reason for my question is he dosent look like any scarlot macaw's we've seen and even the vet said he looked different and that he needed to find out more about the bird. So we are hoping that someone can help to ldentify him or information on how too....

  1. Oh wow he is beautiful. Sorry he isnot friendly.  He is definatly a scarlot macaw, but I think his parents wern't full blood.

  2. Hi,

Yeh it is a scarlet macaw.

  3. I think you have a hybrid! Or he may be someone's attempt at a color mutation. The green at the nape of the neck and the pink primaries are rather unusual.

Definately a scarlet, but if he is a hybrid I'm not sure what other species of macaw he may be crossed with.

  4. Its a scarlet macaw. Maybe it is a mutation which leads to this special colour.. I've seen that kind of thing in grey parrots:

  5. he's a scarlet u can tell but it does look like a unique one

  6. This is definitively a SARLET MACAW MUTATION, called "pied dominant". The Pied mutation is surely the most common colour mutation across avian species, most commonly know in budgerigars, lovebirds, cockatiels and indian ring neck.

You con search the web and find a lot of information under the subjec "Pied dominant".

If the bird is wild caught, it is UNIQUE, because this mutation is very easy to see in captivity breeding, but very hard to see in wild caught birds.
