Shade is correct, sweet gum it is, great tree.

Those do look like the Gum burrs we used to play with as kids.

It is a Sweetgum Tree (Liquidambar styraciflua). They are a nice tree but the "gumballs" are a real pain to clean up. The tree can get quite large...sometimes over 100 feet.
