  1. Yes but I think it's more fantasy than reality. I hate to say that. I'm beginning to think this is not my country or world. I don't fit. I value people and animals over money and material things.

What is so wrong about that? I don't need a castle and 9 cars to make me feel like a success. That's bogus. Most people like that seem to have enormous egos and don't seem to value life at all. It seems completely out of sync with nature.

  2. Therein lies the biggest misconception of all. The general public feel sated in the knowledge that their vote counts. All voting confirms to me is we are so far removed from any form of democracy it's untrue. Millions vote for a few to make decisions, that's not democracy that's control. If we are to achieve democracy in its truest form (as the Greeks originally intended) we should only ever elect spokespeople and not decision makers. Decisions should be made by the people for the people. That is democracy. The ballot box is a joke as are most governments who profess to be working for the people. To put it simply, when was the last time your government asked for your opinion ? No equal rights, no equilibrium, just some who are more equal than others. Orwell was a clever man.

Edit..King Freshy - You make some valuable points but I'd like disagree with you on one thing. You made this point "It will never work in today's world, you can't round up millions of people every day to vote on issues. Its a practical impossibility." Where as years ago you'd no doubt be right, in this day and age with the technology people have, we could let the 'common' man vote from home. Alternatively, we could choose a varied mix of the demographic and have them vote for the masses. Just an idea. Would be interested in your ideas.

  3. If we don't have elected officials that make decisions, it would pretty much be an anarchy, certain groups would ONLY look out for themselves and not all the people.

Direct democracy is what you are talking about.  Direct democracy is a fairy tale and will never ever work in reality.

What representative democracy does is "majority rule, minority rights", direct democracy on the other hand would only be "majority rule", the minority would be screwed.

Direct democracy worked to a certain extent in ancient Greece because back then each city-state made its own decisions, and each city-state was small so every person could be gathered up to vote.

It will never work in today's world, you can't round up millions of people every day to vote on issues.  Its a practical impossibility.

Every form of government that exists in the word today is terrible, however representative democracy is the best of them.
