It happened .They had to eat human flesh.

An Uruguayan Rugby team (who were alumni of Stella Maris College (Montevideo) and their friends and family who were involved in the airplane crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 which crashed into the Andes mountains on October 13, 1972.They had to do it to survive

I´m sure they thought they couldn´t do it,but it was their only chance.

  1. Pass the hot sauce. And don't watch me while I eat.

  2. I read that story in Readers Digest and thought a lot about it too!

Imagine being in a situation where your only hope of living is eating human flesh...though it seems disgusting to me right now i understand that actually facing that situation would be a million times more traumatic.

Kudos to the survivors who managed to get out alive.

  3. No I can't imagine. I have been so fortunate as to never feel true hunger or starvation. It makes me think that when you get down to true survival how desparation can make you imagine doing things that are so outside your very own belief systems.

The closest thing I can think of to relate it to is being sexually abused as a child. As I aged through the abuse, in my early teen years, I just couldn't see an end in sight. It was like I was going to have to spend the rest of my life being raped at my step-father's every whim. So I began to actually imagine killing him. Looking back on it, it was so desparate and I can not imagine ever taking another life but at the time it was real.  I'm thankful I didn't do it and don't have to live with the guilt.

It seems like in the story you mentioned that some of those people ended up commiting suicide and going through horrible depression as a result of the guilt.

    Very sad.
